So you want to write Protocol Fiction

We are always looking for writers. The best way to understand what we publish is to browse our archives of fiction and essays. If you are pitching a story, we recommend gesturing at how it could be part of a larger world. That world does not have to be fully fleshed out. For more on how to do this, read lead writer Spencer Nitkey's Fog of War Worldbuilding.

The stories we publish usually run 2,500–3,000 words, and we occasionally publish flash fiction. You should also look at the Interregnum Story Contest, which is open for submissions until 15 November 2026.

We accept both full drafts and pitches. Send yours to stories@monstroustimes.com, or post them in the #pitches-bounties-workshop channel at the Protocol Institute, where we hang out.

We try to respond to all pitches within a week. AI-generated pitches and drafts are encouraged too, but don't be a slop cannon — include a note explaining how you used it.
